Graphic novels are classified at 741.5 … “class here cartoon fiction, graphic novels (visual novels)”.  Schools Collection items are shelved at FIC, SPICT or PICT as appropriate, according to holdings policy.

The appropriate adult subject subdivision is –Comic books, strips, etc. This is applied to topical headings for both fiction and nonfiction works in comic strip form that are written primarily for adults. The Schools Collection does purchase some material in this category.

The appropriate children’s heading added to graphic novels written for children is Cartoons and comics. An additional entry is made under the heading [topic]—Fiction.

The appropriate adult subject subdivision is –Comic books, strips, etc. (This is applied to topical headings for both fiction and nonfiction works in comic strip form.)
Adult subject headings on works intended for a juvenile audience can be further subdivided by –Juvenile literature.

The appropriate children’s heading is Cartoons and comics. For nonfiction cartoons and comics, an additional entry is made under the heading [topic]—Cartoons and comics.
